Not Just a Deck: Creating a Space You’ll Love All Summer
Canadian summers always feel way too short. We wait all year for those warm, sunny days—then poof, they're gone. So when summer does show up, you want to actually use your outdoor space, not just look at it from the kitchen window.
The goal? Make your deck or patio feel like an extension of your home. A place that’s just as comfortable, functional, and welcoming as your living room—just with better airflow and maybe a few more bugs.
Here’s how to zone and style your outdoor space so it works harder for you all season long.
Create Zones with Purpose
Think of your deck the same way you would your main floor—different spaces for different things.
Start with a BBQ or outdoor kitchen zone, ideally placed close to the patio door for easy access while prepping or cleaning up. If you love cooking outside, this area can include extra counter space, a bar cart, or just a spot to keep trays and utensils ready to go.
Next, carve out a dining space that suits your lifestyle. Maybe it’s a larger table for family dinners or a bistro set for two if you prefer quiet mornings with coffee. Make it feel like its own “room” with an outdoor rug or lights strung above.
Then think about where you’ll relax. A lounge area with comfy seating, a little shade, and somewhere to set your drink is always worth it. You don’t need to go overboard—a couple of chairs and a table can totally work. The key is to make each zone feel like it has a purpose and a bit of personality.
And don’t be afraid to divide these zones in creative ways. Use different materials underfoot, add a pergola or arbour structure, or hang decorative panels to give each area its own feel. Those slatted wood privacy screens are everywhere right now—and for good reason.
Use Planters as Natural Dividers
Planters are one of the easiest ways to define outdoor spaces and make your deck feel lush and cozy.
Tall planters or oversized pots work beautifully to create a sense of separation between areas. You can use them to carve out your lounge zone or add privacy between you and your neighbours. Mix in a variety of textures and heights to keep things visually interesting.
And you don’t have to stop at pots. If you’ve got the space, raised garden beds or permanent landscaping can blend your deck into the yard. Think vines like clematis, flowering shrubs, or even tall grasses for movement and softness. Natural dividers like this help make the space feel layered, private, and just a little more magical.
Play with Levels
If your deck or yard has any sort of elevation change, lean into it.
A tiered deck is the perfect opportunity to create natural zoning. Keep your cooking zone on the top level, closest to the house, for convenience. Then drop down to a dining area or lounge zone that feels a little more tucked away and relaxed.
Even if your space is flat, you can still create the feeling of levels with raised planters, built-in benches, or slightly elevated platforms. One of my favourite ideas is to build a sunken firepit into a slope or turn the sunniest part of the yard into a cozy retreat. You’re not stuck with a rectangle—think about how your space wants to be used, and work with it.
Bring the Indoors Out
Your outdoor space should feel just as welcoming and put-together as the inside of your home. That means bringing some of the same comforts outside.
Layer in outdoor pillows, cozy blankets, and string lights to set the mood. Hanging lights between trees or posts can create the illusion of a ceiling, which instantly makes things feel more cozy and intentional. Side tables, lanterns, and even candles help your space feel more finished—and more functional.
Storage is key, too. There are some great-looking waterproof benches and bins out there now that actually add to the space instead of making it feel cluttered. Use them to store your soft items, games, or bug spray, and you won’t have to haul things in and out every time the weather changes.
Extend Your Season
We all know how fast summer flies by—but a few smart choices can stretch your outdoor season well into fall.
Adding a propane heater, fire bowl, or outdoor fireplace gives you a reason to stay outside a little longer once the temperature start to drop. It also makes your space feel warm and cozy, even on cooler nights.
Shade matters too. A pergola, big umbrella, or even a retractable awning can keep things comfortable when the sun is strong. And don’t forget lighting—solar-powered path lights or string lights keep the mood going after dark.
If bugs are a problem in your area (and let’s be honest, they usually are), consider screening in a part of your deck. Some gazebos come with built-in bug screens, and it honestly becomes the place to hang out in the evenings.
Final Thoughts
Summer’s short—so you might as well make it sweet. Putting a little thought into your deck or patio setup can totally change how much you use (and enjoy) your space. Whether you’re entertaining a crowd or just enjoying a quiet morning coffee outside, having a space that feels like you makes a big difference.
